語源
「heterogamy」はニューラテン語の『heterogamia』に由来し、『hetero-』は「異なる」を、『gamos』は「結婚・結合」を意味した。
語源はギリシャ語の『heteros』（「他・異なる」）と『gamos』（「結婚」）の結合にあり、ニューラテン語の『heterogamia』を経て現代英語の『heterogamy』になった。
当初は「異なる結合（結婚）」を意味したが、時間とともに生物学的な交配の意味や社会学的な異質結婚の意味などを含むようになった。
