語源
「freewheel」は現代英語に由来し、19世紀後半に自転車技術に関連して「free（自由）」と「wheel（車輪）」を結合して作られた語です。
「freewheel」は技術的な複合語として作られ（1800年代後半）、『free』と『wheel』という要素はそれぞれ古英語の語根（'frēo'と'hweol／hwēol'）に由来します。技術用語として自転車の機構とともに広まりました。
