語源
「flashforward」は英語に由来し、『flash』と『forward』という語の合成語である。『flash』は元来「光の一瞬の閃き・短い出来事」を意味し、『forward』は「前へ・未来へ」の意味を持つ。
『flash』（中英語後期頃に「一瞬の閃き」を表す語）と『forward』（古英語 'forweard'「前へ」を意味）が20世紀に物語技法を表す語『flash-forward』として結合され、ハイフンや二語表記を経て一語の『flashforward』と表記されることもあるようになった。
当初は「前方への一瞬の動き」などを指したが、次第に物語の技法として「未来の出来事を示す短い場面」を指す専門用語へと意味が変化した。
