語源
「estrogen（エストロゲン）」は近代ラテン語の『oestrogenum』に由来し、接頭辞「oestro-」はギリシャ語の『oistros（発作・性的興奮、または蚋／gadfly）』、接尾辞『-gen』は「生じさせるもの」を意味します。
『oestrogen』という近代ラテン語や19〜20世紀の科学用語から変化し、綴りが簡略化され特に米国英語で現代英語の『estrogen』となりました。
元々は『熱狂・性的興奮を生じさせるもの』という意味合いがあり、次第に発情（estrus）を引き起こす物質を指すようになり、現在では女性の性発達を促すホルモン群を指す用語になっています。
