語源
「estradiol」は現代の科学造語で、「oestrogen」(新ラテン語／ギリシャ語由来の語幹)と化学接尾辞「-diol」(「di-」+「-ol」)を組み合わせたもので、「oestro-」はギリシャ語の「oistros」(直訳すると「こがらし」「狂熱」＝性的刺激を比喩的に表す)に由来し、「di-」は「2」を、「-ol」は「アルコール（ヒドロキシ基）」を示す。
ギリシャ語の「oistros」から新ラテン語の「oestrogen」が生じ、20世紀初頭の生化学命名法で2つのヒドロキシ基を持つエストロゲン性ステロイドを示すために「estradiol」と命名された。
当初「oestro-」は性的興奮や発情を引き起こすという広い意味を持っていたが、次第に特定のエストロゲン性物質を指すように狭まり、「estradiol」は医療や研究で用いられる特定のステロイドホルモン（17β-エストラジオール）を意味するようになった。
