語源
「epigraphy」はギリシャ語の「epigraphē（碑文）」に由来し、「epi-（上に）」＋「graphein（書く）」から成り、フランス語『épigraphie』を経て英語に入った。
ギリシャ語『epigraphē』がフランス語『épigraphie』に影響し、18〜19世紀に英語『epigraphy』として定着し現代英語の語となった。
当初は「上に書くこと・碑文」の意で、のちに碑文を研究する学問、および転じて碑文群・碑文様式を指す専門的な意味へと特化した。
