語源
「epigraphics」はギリシャ語の「epigraphē」から由来し、「epi-」は「〜の上に」、「graphein」は「書く」を意味した。
「epigraphē」は後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語で「epigraphia」となり、英語には形容詞の「epigraphic」を経て入り、最終的に複数形・集合的な形の「epigraphics」になった。
当初は文字どおり「上に書くこと（碑文）」を指していたが、次第に物理的な碑文そのものやそれらの研究を指すようになった。
