語源
「epigraphic」はギリシャ語の「epigraphikos」に由来し、'epi-'は「上に・〜に対して」、'graphein'は「書く」を意味した。
「epigraphikos」は後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語の「epigraphicus」を経て、19世紀ごろより学術語として英語の「epigraphic」となった。
当初は「物に刻まれた碑文に関する」を意味しており、現代もほぼ同様の意味を保ちつつ、書物の冒頭引用（エピグラフ）に関する用法にも拡張された。
