語源
「dehumanize」は近代英語で成立。接頭辞「de-」（ラテン語由来。「除去」を意味）と「humanize」（フランス語 'humaniser'、ラテン語 'humanus' に由来；「人間」を意味）から成る。
「dehumanize」は19世紀にフランス語の 'déshumaniser' の影響を受けて英語で作られ、後に米英で 'dehumanize' / 'dehumanise' として定着した。
もともとは「人間的特性を剥ぎ取る」という意味で作られ、現在では人々を人間以下に見なすさまざまな社会的・政治的・心理的過程を指す用法に広がった。
