語源
「brutalize」は形容詞「brutal」と動詞化接尾辞「-ize」から派生した語である。『brutal』は最終的にラテン語の『brutalis』に由来し、『brutus』（「重い・鈍い・愚かな」を意味）に遡る。
『brutal』は古フランス語を経て英語に入った（遅ラテン語の『brutalis』から）。19世紀に英語で『brutal』＋『-ize』により動詞『brutalize』が作られ、『brutalizing』はその現在分詞／動名詞の形である。
元々は『獣のような』『粗野な』という意味合いだったが、語義は発展して『残忍な、凶暴な』、そして動詞では『残虐に扱う／むごく扱う』という意味になった。
