語源
「cross-grained」は英語に由来し、'cross'と'grain'の複合語で、'cross'は『不機嫌・横切る』、'grain'は『木の繊維の方向・性格（性質）』を意味した。
『cross-grain』などの中英語期の複合語から発達し、もともとは木材を指した表現が近世英語で人の気性を表す比喩にも拡張された。
当初は『木目が横向きであること』を意味したが、時を経て『反抗的・不機嫌である』という比喩的意味が加わった。
