語源
「column」はラテン語の「columna」から来ており、もともとは「柱」や「支え」を意味した。
「column」は古フランス語の「colonne」や中英語の「columne」を経て英語の「column」になった。
当初は「柱・建築の支え」を意味していたが、印刷や表の「縦の配列」や新聞の「コラム」などの比喩的用法にも拡張された。
