語源
「groupie」はアメリカ英語に由来し、特に「group」＋ 親しみや俗語の接尾辞「-ie」から形成され、20世紀半ばに楽団を追いかけるファンを表す語として作られた。
「groupie」は1960年代に「group」（フランス語「groupe」、イタリア語「gruppo」を経由して英語に入った語）と口語の接尾辞「-ie」の結合として発展した。基底の「group」は以前から集団やバンドを指し、俗語の中で特に音楽グループを意味するようになった。
当初はロックバンドをツアーで追いかける若いファン（しばしば女性）を指したが、次第に有名人を熱心に追う者全般を含むようになり、軽蔑的・性的なニュアンスも帯びるようになった。
