「cholagogic」は後期ラテン語の「cholagogicus」に由来し、その要素はギリシャ語の「chole-（胆汁）」と「-agogos（導く／もたらす）」から来ている。
ギリシャ語の「χολαγωγός（cholagōgós）」が後期ラテン語の「cholagogus／cholagogicus」に変化し、医学用語として英語「cholagogic」に入った。
元は「胆汁を導き出す」という意味で、時を経ても概ね変わらず、現代の医学用語では「胆汁の排出を促す」という意味で用いられている。
