語源
‘cherub’はヘブライ語の‘kĕrūḇ’に由来し、ギリシャ語‘kheroub’、ラテン語‘cherub’を経て伝わった語で、‘kĕrūḇ’は天上の存在を指した。
‘kĕrūḇ’はギリシャ語‘kheroub’、さらにラテン語‘cherubus/cherub’となり、古フランス語・中英語を経て現代英語の‘cherub’となった。
本来は「神の御前に仕える天上の存在」を意味したが、のちに「西洋美術の幼児の姿の天使」や比喩的に「無垢な子ども」の意味も持つようになった。
