語源
『cherubim』はヘブライ語の語『keruvim』に由来し、そこでは『keruv』が天使的存在や守護者の一種を指した。
『cherubim』はヘブライ語の『keruvim』からギリシャ語の『χερουβεῖμ（cheroubim）』を経てラテン語の『cherubim』となり、中英語・現代英語の『cherubim』に至った。
当初は特定の翼ある天使（守護者）を指していたが、時代を経て美術や日常語で『無邪気で愛らしい子ども』や装飾的な天使像を表す意味でも用いられるようになった。
