語源
「capitular」は中世ラテン語の「capitularis」に由来し、最終的にはラテン語の「capitulum」（「小さな頭」を意味する「caput」の小辞形）にさかのぼる。
ラテン語の「caput」（「頭」）から小辞形の「capitulum」（「小さな頭」）が生まれ、中世ラテン語で「capitularis」が形成され、教会用語・専門語として用いられた後、英語の「capitular」になった。
当初は「小さな頭」や「頭状のもの」に関する語だったが、次第に「（教会の）章に関する」という意味に特化し、植物学・解剖学の「頭状（花序）」に関する意味も残った。
