語源
「canonized」は後期ラテン語の「canonizare」から由来し、語幹の「canon-」は（ギリシャ語の）「kanōn」が元で「規則・基準」を意味した。
「canonized」は後期ラテン語の「canonizare」から古フランス語の「canoniser」、中英語の「canonisen／canonize」を経て現代英語の「canonize」になり、その過去形が「canonized」になった。
当初は『誰かを正典（一覧）に入れる』という意味だったが、次第に特に『（人物を）聖人と宣言する』という意味や、より広く『権威あるものとして扱う』という意味に発展した。
