語源
「averroism」は固有名詞「Averroes」（アラビア語名イブン・ルシュドのラテン化形）に英語の接尾辞「-ism」（ギリシャ語『-ismos』がラテン語／古仏語を経たもの、意味は「教義・体系・慣行」）が付いた語に由来する。
「Averroes」はアラビア語の名前「Ibn Rushd（イブン・ルシュド）」に由来する。中世ラテン語形の「Averroes」（および後期ラテン語の「Averroismus」）がスコラ学の著述者により用いられ、そこから中世ヨーロッパで彼に結び付けられた教説や運動を指す英語の「averroism」が派生した。
