語源
「autokinetic」はギリシャ語、具体的には「autokinetos」に由来し、「auto-」は「自己」、「kinetos」は「動く／運動する」を意味した。
「autokinetos」からニュー・ラテン語や学術的ラテン語を経て、現代英語の「autokinetic」となった。
当初は『自己で動く』という意味だったが、時間と共に（特に心理学・視覚現象の）『静止した光が動いて見える自動運動現象』を指す意味でも使われるようになった。
