語源
「atmosphere」はニューラテン語の『atmosphaera』に由来し、ギリシャ語の要素『atmōs』（蒸気・蒸気状のもの）と『sphaira』（球）から成る。
17世紀にギリシャ語『atmōs』＋『sphaira』からニューラテン語の『atmosphaera』として形成され、学術用語として英語に入り、現在の英語の『atmosphere』になった。
当初は「蒸気の球」を意味していたが、次第に「惑星を取り囲む気体の層」を指すようになり、さらに「雰囲気（ムード）」や「圧力の単位」といった意味も持つに至った。
