'athletocracy'は現代英語の造語で、ギリシャ語の'athlētēs'（ ：アスリート）と、ギリシャ語由来の接尾辞'-kracy'（'kratos'：支配・権力）を組み合わせたものに由来する。
'athletocracy'は'aristocracy'や'democracy'のような-cracy語に倣って現代英語で作られた語で、1つの古典語から直接変化してきたわけではない。19〜20世紀頃に社会や政治のあり方を論じる文脈で出現した造語である。
当初は「アスリートによる支配」を意味する造語として作られ、その意味は大きく変わらず、比喩的に制度や文化におけるアスリートの優位を指すことが多い。
