語源
「astringency」は現代英語で、副詞形の'adstringent'（形容詞）と名詞化接尾辞'-cy'から作られた語に由来します。
『astringent』はラテン語の'adstringentem'（動詞'adstringere'の現在分詞、'ad-'＋'stringere'）に由来し、「きつく締める／引き締める」という意味でした。後にラテン語→英語へ入り、最終的に形容詞'astringent'および名詞'astringency'になりました。
元は「きつく締める」という行為を表していましたが、時代とともに組織を収縮させる作用や、口内で感じる渋み・乾燥感を表す現在の意味に変化しました。
