語源
「astringence」はラテン語の『adstringere』（または『astringere』）に由来し、接頭辞'ad-'は「〜へ・〜に向かって」を、'stringere'は「強く引く・締める」を意味した。
『adstringere』は中世ラテン語の『adstringentia』／『astringentia』などの形になり、フランス語の『astringence』を経て英語の『astringence』になった。
元は「結びつける・締める」といった意味だったが、次第に組織を収縮させる・渋みや乾きの感覚を示す意味になり、さらに比喩的に「鋭さ・厳しさ」を表すこともあるようになった。
