語源
「astatize」は近代ラテン語／科学語から派生した語で、もとギリシャ語の「astatos」に由来する。ここで接頭辞「a-」は「〜でない」を、'statos'は「立つ・留まる」を意味した。
ギリシャ語の「astatos」は近代ラテン語の形（例：「astaticus」）を経て英語の形容詞「astatic」になり、そこから動詞「astatize」が科学語として作られ、現在の分詞形「astatizing」になった。
元来は「立っていない・安定しない」を意味したが、科学英語では特に磁気装置や力学計器の復元力を打ち消して感度を高める操作を指す意味に変化した。
