語源
「astatic」は新ラテン語の「astaticus」に由来し、ギリシャ語の否定接頭辞「a-」（〜でない）と「statikos」（立っている・静止した）から成る。
「astaticus」（新ラテン語）は科学分野で用いられ、19世紀に英語の「astatic」として取り入れられ、ギリシャ語由来の語形成を保った。
当初は「静的でない／不動でない」を意味していたが、次第に物理・計測の専門用語として「合成磁気モーメントを持たない」という技術的意味を帯びるようになり、一般的な「不安定・変動しやすい」の意味も残った。
