語源
「aristeia」は古代ギリシャ語の「ἀριστεία（aristeía）」に由来し、そこでは「aristos」が「最良・最上」を意味した。
「ἀριστεία」はホメーロス時代のギリシャ語で戦闘における卓越を指して用いられた。学術や文献の流れでラテン語化・近代語化され（例：「aristeia」）英語に導入され、文学研究で用いられている。
当初は「卓越」や「（とりわけ戦闘における）最良の働き」を意味していたが、時間とともに叙事詩的な英雄の絶頂的活躍を指す意味で定着し、比喩的に他分野の全盛期を指す用法にも拡張された。
