語源
「areopagy」はギリシャ語の語句「Areios pagos（Ἄρειος πάγος）」に由来し、「Areios」は神アレースを、「pagos」は岩・丘を意味した。
「Areios pagos」はラテン語の'A reopagus'（Areopagus）を経て中世ラテン語・英語に入り、評議会やその管轄を示す派生形 'areopagy' として用いられるようになった。
当初は『アレスの丘』（地理的場所）を指したが、やがて『そこで開かれた評議会・裁判所』、さらに一般に『裁判所・権威ある評議会』を意味するようになった。
