語源
「archibenthal」は現代の学術語で、ギリシャ語の接頭辞「archi-」（「主要な、極端な」）と「benthal」（ギリシャ語の「benthos」＝「深さ」由来）を組み合わせた語です。
ギリシャ語の「benthos」から「benthic（ベントスに関する）」や「benthal」といった学術用語が生まれ、「archi-」を組み合わせて「archibenthal」が大陸斜面などの主要な深層帯を指す語として成立しました。
当初は「主要な深さ」や「極度の深さ」という意味合いの語素の組合せだったが、次第に「深層の上部（上部バイサル／上部バサル）帯」を指す専門用語として定着しました。
