語源
「sublittoral」はラテン語に由来し、要素「sub-」と「littoralis」から来ており、「sub-」は「下に」、「litus」（「littoralis」の語根）は「海岸」を意味した。
「sublittoral」は英語でラテン語起源の接頭辞「sub-」を「littoral」に付けて形成され、「littoral」はフランス語の「littoral」を経てラテン語の「littoralis」から来ており、科学用語として沿岸下部の領域を指す語として定着した。
