語源
「bathyal」はギリシャ語の『bathys』に由来し、『bathys』は「深い」を意味する。そこに英語の形容詞化接尾辞 '-al'（主に学術用語としての新ラテン語→近代語を経由）を付けて作られた。
ギリシャ語の『bathys』は学術ラテン語で結合形'bathy-'となり、19世紀に海洋学で中間深度域を指す専門用語として英語の'bathyal'が形成された。
元々は『深い』という意味だったが、時間とともに特定の深海中間層（おおむね水深200〜2000m）を指す専門用語およびその形容詞的用法へと発展した。
