語源
「archaism」はフランス語の語「archaïsme」から来ており、その語幹の「archaï-」（ギリシャ語の「arkhaios」に由来）は「古い」を意味した。
「archaism」は古フランス語の「archaïsme」や中世ラテン語の「archaismus」（ギリシャ語「arkhaios」を反映）から変化し、最終的に現代英語の「archaism」になった。
当初は「古さ」や「以前の時代に属するもの」を広く指したが、時間とともに「古いまたは廃れた語・表現やその使用」を指すように意味が狭まった。
