語源
「arcadianism」は英語に由来し、形容詞『Arcadian』と接尾辞『-ism』から成る。『Arcadian』は田園の単純さで知られるギリシャの地名『Arcadia』を指す。
『Arcadian』はラテン語や中世・近代の『Arcadia』を経て英語に入り（ギリシャ語『Arkadía』/Αρκαδίαに由来、神話上の人物『Arcas』の名に由来）、その後英語で名詞化接尾辞『-ism』が付いて『arcadianism』となった。
当初は「Arcadia（地名）に関する・それに属する」という意味だったが、時代とともに「田園的で素朴な生活の理想化・擁護」という現在の意味に発展した。
