語源
「arbour」は中英語に由来し、さらに古い段階では古フランス語の「arbre」を経てラテン語の「arbor」から来ており、「arbor」は「木」を意味した。
ラテン語の「arbor」が古フランス語の「arbre」に変化し、そこから中英語の『arbor／arbure』のような形になり、最終的に現代英語の「arbour」になった。
当初は「木」を意味していたが、次第に「木やつるで作られた陰の小屋・日よけ（＝arbour）」やそこから派生した動詞の「かくまう・保護する」などの意味に変化した。
