語源
「arbitrage」はフランス語の単語「arbitrage」から来ており、語根の「arbiter」（ラテン語 'arbiter'）は「裁定者・判定者」を意味した。
「arbitrage」は現代フランス語の「arbitrage」を経て英語に入った。語源はラテン語の「arbiter（判定者）」にさかのぼる。もともとは『判断・裁定』の意味で使われた。
当初は『判断・裁定の行為』を指していたが、時代を経て商業・金融の分野で『市場間の価格差を利用する取引（裁定取引）』という意味に発展した。
