語源
「aquaplane」はラテン語と英語の造語要素に由来し、具体的にはラテン語の「aqua」＝「水」と、古仏語の「planer」やラテン語の「planare」に由来する「plane」＝「（平らにする・）滑る」の語根から成る。
「aquaplane」は20世紀初頭に英語で造語され、当初は水上で乗る板や器具を指した。その後、（水の上を滑る）動作や、路面の水によるタイヤのグリップ喪失の現象を指す意味へと発展し、『hydroplane』とほぼ同義で使われるようになった。
当初は水上で使う器具（ボード）を意味していたが、時を経て（車などが）水の上を滑るという動作や現象（＝タイヤの接地を失うこと）を表す意味へと変化した。
