語源
「apsidal」はラテン語の『apsidalis』に由来し、さらにラテン語『apsis』やギリシャ語『hapsis』にさかのぼる。語根は「アーチ」や「ヴォールト（半円形の屋根）」を意味した。
ギリシャ語『hapsis』がラテン語『apsis』（後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語）になり、『apsidalis』という形容詞が生じた。これが中世〜近代英語を経て英語の形容詞『apsidal』になった。
もともとは「アーチ」や「アーチ状のくぼみ」を指していたが、次第に建築における「後陣に関する」という意味になり、さらに技術的文脈（天文学・軌道力学）で「アプス（近点・遠点）に関する」という意味にも拡張された。
