「appurtenance」は中英語（14–15世紀）に由来し、最終的にはラテン語の『appertinēre』（ad- + pertinēre）に遡る。ここで'ad-'は「〜へ」、'pertinēre'は「属する・関係する」を意味した。
『appurtenance』は古フランス語／中英語の『apartenance』『appurtenaunce』などから変化し、最終的に現代英語の『appurtenance』になった。
