語源
「apprehend」はラテン語の「apprehendere」に由来し、接頭辞の「ad-」は「～へ・～に向かって」を、語根の「prehendere」は「つかむ・握る」を意味します。
「apprehend」はラテン語の「apprehendere」から古フランス語の形（例：「aprehendre」）を経て、中英語の「apprehenden」となり、やがて現代英語の「apprehend」になりました。
当初は「つかむ・捕える」という意味でしたが、次第に「精神的に把握する」「（未来を）不安に思う」といった意味も含むようになりました。
