語源
「apposition」はラテン語の「appositio」から来ており、接頭辞の「ad-」（ここでは「ap-」）は「～へ／～に向かって」を意味し、語幹の「ponere」または「posit-」は「置く」を意味した。
「apposition」は中世ラテン語（Late Latin）『appositio』から中英語を経て英語に入った。
当初は「近くに置く行為・状態」を意味しており、徐々に「ある名詞の隣に置かれて説明・特定を行う名詞句」という文法上の専門的な意味を持つようになった。
