語源
『appliqué』はフランス語の『appliquer』に由来し、さらにラテン語の『applicare』（『ad-』＋『plicare』）に遡る。ここで『ad-』は「～へ/～に向かって」、『plicare』は「折る・置く」を意味した。
『appliqué』はフランス語の過去分詞形から変化し、19世紀に英語に借用されて名詞・形容詞として定着し、そこから動詞的に用いられるようになった。
元は「（物を）付ける・当てる」という意味だったが、現代英語では主に装飾的に付けられた布片などを指す針仕事の技法やそれによって飾られた物を意味するようになった。
