語源
「apotheosis」はギリシャ語の「apotheōsis」(ἀποθέωσις)に由来し，「apo-」は「〜から/離れて」，「theos」は「神」を意味し，合わせて「神にする（神格化）」の意を含む。
「apotheosis」は後期ラテン語（Late Latin）を経て中英語に入り，最終的に現代英語の「apotheosis」になり，複数形は「apotheoses」となった。
当初は「人を神にする行為（神格化）」を意味したが，時間とともに比喩的に「最高点・頂点」を意味する用法にも広がった。
