語源
「canonization」は中世ラテン語の『canonizare』に由来し、要素の『kanon』（ギリシャ語由来）は「規則・基準」を意味し、接尾辞『-ize』は「〜にする」という意味を持つ。
『canonizare』は古フランス語の『canoniser』や中英語の『canonize』を経て、現代英語の名詞『canonization』（聖人認定・正典化）になった。
元々は「規則・基準に従って分類・列挙する」という意味があり、教会用語では「聖人と宣言する」という意味で用いられた。現在も「公式化・権威づけ」の意味が主に残っている。
