語源
「apostasy」はギリシャ語の『ἀποστασία（apostasia）』に由来し、接頭辞『apo-』は「～から離れて」を、また『stasis』（histanaiに由来）は「立つこと・距離を置くこと」を表した。
『apostasy』は後期ラテン語の『apostasia』を経て、古フランス語／中世ラテン語の形を取り、古英語期の『apostasie』となり、最終的に現代英語の『apostasy』になった。
当初は「離れて立つこと」「離反」の一般的な意味だったが、次第に宗教的（後に政治的・思想的も含む）信仰や信条の放棄を指すように意味が特化した。
