語源
「apoplectic」はギリシャ語に由来し、具体的には『apoplēktikos』（ἀποπληκτικός）という語から来ており、接頭辞の『apo-』は「離れて／〜から」を意味し、語根は『打つ』を意味する。
『apoplecticus』／『apoplecticus』（ラテン語）を経て、現代英語の『apoplectic』になった。
当初は「脳卒中に関する」という医学的意味だったが、のちに「激怒している」という比喩的な意味が加わった。
