語源
「apoikia」は古代ギリシャ語の語『ἀποικία』に由来し、『ἀπό』は「～から離れて」を、『οἶκος』は「家・住まい」を意味した。
『apoikia』は古代ギリシャ語の『ἀποικία』から教会ラテン語や学術ラテン語に受け継がれ、学術的・聖書学的文脈で英語の'apoikia'として用いられるようになった。
当初は「移住者が築いた入植地（植民地）」を指し、時代が下るにつれて「国外共同体／ディアスポラ」や「亡命・仮住まい」といった意味も帯びるようになった。
