語源
「apocryph」はギリシャ語の「apokryphos」から来ており、「apo-」は「離れて（away）」、 「kryph-」（「kryptein」由来）は「隠す」を意味した。
「apokryphos」は後期ラテン語の「apocryphus」、中世ラテン語の「apocriphus / apocrypha」を経て、中英語の「apocripha」のような形で入ってきて、現代英語の「apocryph」や形容詞「apocryphal」となった。
当初は「隠された、秘された」を意味したが、時とともに「（出所が）隠れている＝真偽が疑わしい」という現在の意味に変化した。
