語源
「Apocrypha」はギリシャ語の『apókrupha』に由来し、『apo-』は「離れて／外へ」、『kruptos（kryptein）』は「隠された」を意味した（つまり「隠されたもの」）。
『Apocrypha』はギリシャ語『apókrupha』からラテン語（教会ラテン語）へ入り、中世ラテン語を経て中英語に取り入れられ、現代英語の形になった。
当初は「隠されたもの」を意味していたが、時代とともに「真正性が疑わしい文書」や「正典から除かれた書物」を指す意味に変化した。
