語源
「apocalyptical」は最終的にギリシャ語の「apokálypsis」(ἀποκάλυψις)に由来し、接頭辞「apo-」は「離れて・外へ」を意味し、「kalyptō」は「覆う」を意味する（つまり「覆いを取る＝啓示、明らかにする」）。
「apokálypsis」は後期ラテン語の「apocalypsis」を経て中英語の「apocalypse」になり、そこから「apocalyptic」「apocalyptical」のような形容詞が発達して、啓示や世界の終わりに関することを表すようになった。
元々は「明らかにすること・啓示」を意味していたが、時間とともに「世界の終わりの出来事」や「壊滅的破壊」という意味へと変化し、これが現代での主要な用法になっている。
