語源
「aoristic」はギリシャ語の単語「aoristos」から派生し、接頭辞「a-」は「〜でない」を、'oristos'は「定義された／限定された」を意味した。
「aoristos」は後期・中世ラテン語を経て文法用語として定着し、現代の言語学では『アオリスティック（aoristic）』という形容詞がアオリストに関するものを指す語として形成された。
当初は「定義されていない／非限定の」を意味していたが、やがて文法用語としてアオリスト（単純・非限定の相/時制）を表す専門用語となり、現代では文法的用法と拡張的な「非限定的」な意味の両方が残っている。
